Gold Standard Treatment

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

CDT is the internationally recognized gold standard for lymphedema treatment. This comprehensive approach combines four key components to effectively reduce swelling and help you maintain results long-term.

Treatment typically involves an intensive phase (4-6 weeks of frequent visits) followed by a maintenance phase where you'll have the skills and tools to manage your lymphedema independently with periodic check-ins.

CDT includes four components:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  • Compression Bandaging
  • Therapeutic Exercise
  • Skin Care & Hygiene

Individual Services

Specialized Treatments

Each service can be provided as part of CDT or as a standalone treatment based on your needs.

🖐

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

A gentle, rhythmic massage technique that redirects lymph fluid from swollen areas to healthy lymph nodes where it can drain properly. MLD is deeply relaxing while being therapeutically effective at reducing swelling and discomfort.

🧹

Compression Therapy & Garment Fitting

Expert application of multilayer compression bandaging during the intensive treatment phase, plus professional measurement and fitting of compression garments for long-term maintenance. I'll help you navigate insurance coverage for garments too.

🏃

Therapeutic Exercise Programs

Customized exercise routines designed to promote lymphatic flow, improve range of motion, and build strength safely. You'll learn exercises you can continue at home to support your treatment gains between visits.

🩹

Post-Surgical Lymphedema Care

Specialized early intervention for patients following cancer surgery, lymph node removal, or radiation therapy. Early treatment can significantly reduce the severity of lymphedema and improve long-term outcomes.

📚

Self-Management Education

Comprehensive training in self-care techniques including self-massage, bandaging, skin care routines, and exercise programs. My goal is to empower you to confidently manage your lymphedema between visits and for life.

📋

Lymphedema Risk Assessment

Proactive evaluation for individuals at risk of developing lymphedema, such as cancer survivors. Early detection through baseline measurements and monitoring can lead to earlier intervention and better outcomes.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's referral?
Florida allows direct access to physical therapy, meaning you can see me without a physician referral for evaluation and a limited number of treatment sessions. However, some insurance plans may require a referral for coverage. I'll help you determine what your plan needs during our initial consultation.
How long does treatment typically take?
The intensive phase of CDT typically involves 3-5 visits per week for 4-6 weeks. After that, you'll transition to a maintenance phase with less frequent visits. Every patient is different, and I'll give you a clear timeline during your evaluation.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the affected area. Avoid tight jewelry or restrictive garments on the affected limb. I'll provide everything needed for treatment.
Is lymphedema therapy painful?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a very gentle technique — most patients find it deeply relaxing. Compression bandaging may feel snug but should never be painful. I'll always check in with you and adjust treatment to your comfort level.
Can lymphedema be cured?
While lymphedema is a chronic condition, it can be very effectively managed with proper treatment. Most patients see significant reduction in swelling during the intensive phase and maintain those results long-term with self-management techniques and compression garments.
